The square knot is a classic for connecting lines and tying knots. In other words, it is used to join two ropes of the same size. It is the first knot we learn to make with our shoelaces. Whether you are tying two ropes together to make a longer rope, or you are tying up a bundle of firewood to carry, the square knot is a winner. It’s much more secure and stable than its cousin the granny knot. The trick to tying a square knot instead of a granny knot is in knowing the order of looping the rope. "Right over left and left over right".

Take two ropes and cross them (red over blue) to form a half knot. Cross them a second time (red over blue again) and pull the ends tight to form the Square Knot.
